Beginning in 1995 the Director of Associational Missions began to sense the need for a new church in the Hospital Corridor of Billings. This area is a very densely populated area of Billings. Neighborhood after neighborhood of working families exists here. It is estimated that there are 22,563 homes in the target radius of 5 miles surrounding the church. This represents a population of approximately 51,000. After praying for 7 years, the dream began to become reality.
Pastor Greg and Patty Payton along with their three sons moved to Montana to pioneer this new work in Billings. In the fall of 2002, God provided a facility at the corner of 12th Street and Grand Ave to begin this new work. The next several months were filled with the busy work of starting a church. March 9, 2003 marked the first worship service for what was then called West Park Baptist Church. The service that morning included 3 people, including the Pastor. It was on this Sunday that the vision for the church was born.
The church grew over the next couple of years and tried desperately to find a permanent location. The church met at Montana State University in Billings, on Colton Blvd, in an office building near Lockwood, in homes, and finally at Yellowstone Bible College Chapel.
On July 4, 2010, The Rock Church found it’s permanent home in Laurel Montana. “God was doing something much bigger than us,” Pastor Greg said. “On paper it doesn’t make sense, other than this being the will of God and His people following through.”
Essentially what happened is that Emmanuel Baptist Church in Billings sold the property in Laurel to The Rock Church. Then, on Sept. 19, The Rock hosted its Grand Opening/Harvest Sunday, called “Discover the Rock Weekend", with 170 people participating, including 44 first-time visitors.
The real testimony here is what the Power of God can do, when His people fall on their face before Him, surrender to His leading, and allow the Holy Spirit to move.
